NDYP Now Accepting Applications for Annual Best Place Awards

Does your business employ individuals under the age of 40? Does your company have an internship program? Do you believe your business is one of the best places to work in the state? If so, your company is eligible to apply for the 2011 NDYP Best Place to Work and Intern Awards. Submit your nomination online. Deadline for application is December 2, 2011.

The Best Place to Work and Intern awards, started by NDYP in 2008, are a reflection of the creativity and innovation that businesses offer young professionals (YP). In order to be considered for the award, applicants must submit a questionnaire about company benefits, advancement opportunities, and why the business is an outstanding place for young professionals to work. A statewide committee of NDYP judges reviews nominees and determines winners and runners-up (if applicable).

Winners are selected based on pre-set criteria examining how the business benefits individuals, how the organization supports local YP networks and YP development, and on how the company gives back to the community. Extra attention is paid to unique best practices that are used to develop the work environment and create opportunities for individuals.

Past Best Place to Work winners include Sundog, Fargo; North Dakota Stockmen's Association, Bismarck; and North Dakota Department of Transportation, Bismarck. Past Best Place to Intern winners include Ebeltoft . Sickler . Lawyers . PLLC, Dickinson; Absolute Marketing, Moorhead, Minn.; and McFarlane Sheet Metal, Grand Forks.

Since that time, NDYP has assisted in the formation of two new YP networks, conducted an educational track at the Governor's Workforce Summit, participated in the Workforce Congress, and served as a communication tool for all local YP networks. Local YP networks use NDYP to share best practices, event speakers, and mentor emerging networks.

Operation Care

The Outreach Team is working on raising donations for Operation Care. We will be collecting items (shoes, clothing, school supplies, etc.) at all YP events including Power Hours, Quarterly Meetings, and Team Meetings during February and March. Please consider helping this worthy cause.

Monetary donations will also be accepted to help purchase more items and to help cover the cost of shipping our items to Afghanistan. Please contact Jennifer Lade or Richard Marby with questions or concerns.

Here is a little background on Operation Care:

Operation Care is a 100% volunteer organization comprised of military and civilian members serving in the Afghanistan Theater of Operations. They are dedicated to the welfare of both the people of Afghanistan and UN/NATO Coalition forces. Their mission is contingency, with active collaborations toward long term solutions. They bridge the gaps in humanitarian aid (HA) delivery via coalition distribution channels reaching areas inaccessible to both government and non-governmental (charitable) organizations.

Operation Care accepts humanitarian donations of basic necessities including shoes, clothing, blankets, and school supplies. For Coalition Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, and Airmen stationed at remote forward operating bases they provide personal comfort items and other basic amenities. The American people are not only active participants; they are the key to success. With their generous support of HA donations, Operation Care works to ensure the future of a free and democratic Afghanistan, the welfare of its people, and a secure, peaceful and nurturing environment for its children.

Please follow the guidelines that Operation Care has provided with the items that are acceptable.
Allegiant announces Minot to Phoenix flights to start in March

Beginning March 3, Minot-area travelers will be able to fly direct to Phoenix.

Allegiant announced Tuesday that it will be offering two weekly, nonstop flights between Minot and Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport, with fares as low as $90 one way.

Allegiant expects a strong response given the interest in its existing flights to Las Vegas, which it initiated last October.

"The community has really supported all the flights, and we are booking those full," said Sabrina LoPiccolo, Allegiant spokeswoman, who came from Las Vegas to make the announcement at the Minot airport Tuesday. "I know these flights to Phoenix will be very popular."

Allegiant's Phoenix flights will depart Minot Thursdays and Sundays at 6:35 p.m., arriving in Phoenix-Mesa at 8:25 p.m. Flights leaving Phoenix-Mesa will depart at 2:10 p.m. and arrive in Minot at 5:55 p.m. All times are local. The Las Vegas flights arrive and depart on Fridays and Mondays.

Wendy Howe, director of the Minot Convention & Visitors Bureau, said a survey a few years ago listed Phoenix as one of the top five destinations for travelers from the Minot area.

"So we know that the service has been asked for, has been wanted for quite some time, and people are going to be very, very excited," she said.

Allegiant is taking bookings for the new flights. The advertised fare, which excludes taxes and fees, only is available until Feb. 2 when made through the company's Web site or by calling 702-505-8888. Allegiant partners with hotels in the Phoenix area to offer packages that include hotel and car rentals. It also offers tour packages.

Mayor Curt Zimbelman made a slip in welcoming the flight, catching himself calling it an Orlando flight. The city already is lobbying Allegiant to consider flights from Minot to the Florida home of Disney World, and that's where thoughts are centered now.

"But this is great news for our airport," Zimbelman said of the Phoenix flights. "Our airport has been growing with leaps and bounds the kind of growing pains that are good to deal with."

He indicated more improvements are planned at the airport to accommodate current and potential future flights. Boardings in November 2010 had doubled from a year earlier.

"That really speaks highly of what we are doing here at the airport," Zimbelman said.

LoPiccolo jokingly suggested the catch to Minot getting the Phoenix flights is for the mayor to hit a hole-in-one on a practice putting course set up along with cacti from Lowe's Garden Center to add atmosphere to the event. Out of practice in North Dakota's winter, Zimbelman missed the hole-in-one but made his second shot, which was good enough for Allegiant.

The putting course was available to people who wanted to try their hands at a hole-in-one for a golf ball emblazoned with the Allegiant or airport logo.

Every year Salvation Army provides holiday assistance to parents who cannot afford Christmas gifts for their children. Right now Salvation Army is looking for donations of gifts.

The Outreach Team contacted them to find out what the greatest need was and every year the teenage gifts are lacking. Axe Body Spray, Eye Shadow, Lip Gloss, Books, Hats, Mittens, Aeropostale T-Shirts, and the list goes on.

The Outreach Team has decided to help Salvation Army collect teenage appropriate gifts. We will have drop boxes at all YP sponsored events for the months of November and December.

Minot Young Professionals Club joins 2nd Story for evening of fun

As the bingo numbers were being called and cards tended to accordingly, there was a lot of high fives and fun chatter. It was another evening of enjoyment Wednesday for members of Minot's 2nd Story, a social club for adults with developmental disabilities. Interspersed in the crowd of bingo players were several members of the Minot Young Professionals Club. They had volunteered a few hours of their time and were popular guests for the evening.

"This was a great opportunity to volunteer and hang out and I love bingo," said Stephanie Tornatore, a member of the Young Professionals Club who was assisting a table of bingo players. "I thought this would be a fun chance to volunteer."

Moments earlier a 2nd Story member had held up a winning card at the same table. He collected one of several prizes donated by the Young Professionals Club. A few feet away, in a modern kitchen, Dot Theobald was cutting brownies in a pan. The brownies were a small portion of the special treats that were about to be served.

"We normally don't have all these goodies. They brought goodies and prizes!" exclaimed a grateful Theobald.

Theobald has been associated with 2nd Story for 16 years. She calls the endeavor rewarding and says it is what she wants to do. Her enthusiasm was apparent as she recorded bingo numbers and watched the smiling faces of 2nd Story members.

"Some have physical limitations, but they all love the game of bingo," said Theobald. "We've been here for 35 years thanks to the goodness of the community. The Young Professionals is just an example. They'll maybe make it an annual thing."

Groups interested in following the Young Professionals Club lead in assisting at 2nd Story are encouraged to call 838-0912. Questions about who may qualify for 2nd Story are asked to contact at the number previously listed. The 2nd Story is open from 2 to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Ackerman-Estvold recognized as a top place to work by N.D. Young Professionals

Minot-based Ackerman-Estvold Engineering was recently recognized by the North Dakota Young Professionals (NDYP) as a top place to work in North Dakota.

The Top Place to Work designation is a runner up category for NDYP's Best Place to Work award. This is the second year NDYP has recognized North Dakota businesses for their innovation and creativity in attracting and retaining young professionals.

Ryan Ackerman, Project Manager with Ackerman-Estvold and a local young professional, says it's the unwritten, informal aspects of the firm that make it a top place to work. "As a smaller firm, every employee - regardless of the position - understands the expectation and responsibility to get the job done right and work as a team. New employees jump into real projects the moment they walk in the door, and our employee-centric environment is very conducive to young professionals with families."

Ackerman also points out that the firm is a strong supporter of young professionals in many ways. "Eight out of 10 staff members are involved in the Minot Young Professionals organization. In addition, Ackerman-Estvold is a huge proponent of working with interns and hiring young people coming back to the Minot area."

All organizations considered for the award were judged on qualifications including company benefits, advancement opportunities, and why they are an outstanding place for young professionals to work. A statewide committee of four Young Professional judges sifted through the nominees, determining the winner, as well as five runners up in the Best Place to Work category.

Young Professionals Network to host Minot State Unity in Our Community September 21

In continuing its support for Minot State University, the Young Professionals Network of Minot will host its second annual "Minot State Unity in Our Community" on Monday, September 21, in the Ann Nicole Nelson Hall at MSU.

To help kick off homecoming week at MSU, the Minot Young Professionals are excited to the announce the opportunity to bring Bill Rancic ,winner of NBC's first season of "The Apprentice", from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. followed by a meet and greet with the audience from 7:30 to 8 p.m.

The Minot State "Unity in Our Community" campaign was officially launched back in the summer of 2008 with a two-fold purpose: to bring the business community to the campus of MSU and to allow MSU students and faculty to feel businesses' support the university.

The vision of the campaign is to have participating businesses in Minot display a designed frame that includes the campaign logo and three caveats that the business agrees to subscribe to. The three caveats include: supports MSU, Provides hiring opportunities to MSU students and / or graduates and Speaks highly of MSU. Last year, more than 100 businesses pledged their support for MSU, and this year's campaign looks to be on track.

The public is encouraged to attend this one-of-a kind event and have the opportunity to meet Mr. Rancic, and afterwards everyone is invited to the homecoming bonfire on campus, weather permitting.

About Bill Rancic - Donald Trump's 1st Apprentice
Not slowing down since becoming Donald Trump's original Apprentice, Bill can be seen on the A&E channel series "We Mean Business" Saturday mornings at 10 a.m. EST/PST. In addition to regularly appearing in The Board Room on the popular NBC prime time show "The Apprentice", Bill has been a premier guest on NBC's Today Show, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, CNBC and quoted in many major national and daily newspaper outlets.

Most recently, Bill completed his second book, titled "Beyond the Lemonade Stand" which was written to help educate and motivate young people around the world about the value of money and how to leverage your skills, talents and abilities at an early age. All proceeds from the sale of this book have gone to charity. "Beyond the Lemonade Stand" is the follow up to the New York Times best-selling book in 2003, titled "You're Hired: How To Succeed in Business and Life from the Winner of The Apprentice," which chronicled Bill's successful life, experience and proven advice.

Bill Rancic founded the successful company, Cigars Around the World twelve years ago in a 400 sq. ft. studio apartment. Today, it is a thriving multi-million dollar national operation. The son of educators, he is a true entrepreneur, who originally earned his way through college by starting a boat wash and wax business in the Chicago area.

Bill is involved in many charities and is an active board member for the Mercy Home for Boys and Girls. In his spare time, Bill has competed in marathons and triathlons and travels extensively speaking to businesses and universities around the country.

YPs Mentioned in Jack Schultz Article

Business Watch recently published an interview with Jack Schultz, author of Boomtown USA and a pioneer in town revitalization. Below is an excerpt from his interview:

BW: Brain drain is a signifi - cant problem in the upper Midwest. You note that the North Dakota Ambassadors program is one of the best that you have seen in your travels.
JS: Communities need to stay in touch with their high school and college graduates who have moved away. The North Dakota Ambassadors program understands that. I recommend that communities stay in touch with former residents by e-mail or letter. There is a homing instinct that will take place when members of Generation Y, currently ages 12-27, get married and have children - they want to come back. Let them know what the opportunities are in their hometowns.

BW: North Dakota has many new young professional (YP) groups. Why are these important?
JS: I am seeing YP groups popping up all over. They are a way for young people to connect with each other. This is especially important when a community's demographics are skewed to senior citizens. YPs don't read the newspaper, for example; they are often not linked to their communities in a meaningful way. YP groups are one way to make that link.

The YP Service Team is organizing a team to participate in Relay for Life! The event takes place June 5th at Minot State University.

Fighting cancer is a team effort. The impact we can make together is much greater than what any of us could do alone. By supporting our team, you will be a part of a life-changing event that celebrates the lives of those who have battled cancer, remembers loved ones lost, and empowers all of us to fight back against a disease that takes too much.

If interested, sign up at www.minotrelay.com. All team members need to be registered by April 24th in order to get T-shirts in time! After registering, you will receive an e-mail with a link to the website that can be forwarded to family and friends who wish to donate.

Our fundraising goal is $100 per person. We are encouraging everyone to sell the luminaria bags to reach this goal. The bags are lighted during a ceremony that recognizes people being honored or remembered for their fight against cancer. These are $10 each and can be ordered directly off the website. The Relay for Life Committee usually decorates the bags, but if anyone wishes to decorate theirs personally let us know!

The water is rising fast and they need people to help sandbag. The Red River is expected to crest at 43ft - this could set a new record and over 2 million sandbags need to be prepared and placed prior to then. They have a great start with area students and citizens pitching in, but they are still in desperate need of many more volunteers to help sandbag.

How To Volunteer

All volunteers are asked to park at the Fargodome in lot C (Southeast corner) and take shuttles to sandbag headquarters. To make sure shifts are equally covered, volunteers are also asked to call the volunteer hotline, 701-476-4000, before arriving on site.

Wine walk strolls into Downtown Minot

Tickets will go on sale August 15 for the Downtown Business and Professional Association second annual Downtown Wine Walk on September 18 from 5 to 10 p.m.
Tickets are $25 and may be purchased from Off the Vine, 15 S. Main St., or Cookies For You, 117 S. Main St., and all participants must register at Off the Vine that night of the walk.

This year, 26 businesses are on tap to serve varieties of wine along with hors d'oeuvres to compliment the wine. There will also be plenty of street entertainment as the crowds wander Minot's heart.

According to Bonny Kemper, president of the DBPA, the wine walk is an event to get people downtown in the evening and to showcase the businesses with the owners not having to worry about their establishments, but instead being able meet new potential customers.

"From the mind of Dianna Rylander, owner of Off the Vine, last year's inaugural wine walk proved to be a huge success, and it was a 'Sold Out Event'," Kemper said. "It also proved to be an enjoyable evening with people finding all sorts of new areas, stores and hideaways in Minot's best kept secret. We want to continue this tradition for years to come."

Kemper also said what is unique about the wine walk is that participants walk away with a memory of each business they visit with a stamp in their passport book they receive as a memento of the celebrated event.

However, Kemper cautions those who attend this year's wine walk that the passport is their ticket to get into the wine walk, and they must have it with them prior to entering the walk.

The funds raised from the wine walk will go toward the beautification efforts of Downtown Minot.

Currently, sponsors of the walk include Fisher Motors, SRT, Mid-Town Chiropractic, Kemper Construction, Real Builders, Wells Fargo, Ed Phillips, Subway, Wedding World, First Western Bank & Trust and Coldwell Banker.

For more information, call Cookies For You at 839-4975 or Off the Vine at 838-7003 or visit

The North Dakota State Fair Celebrates the "Best" of North Dakota

Dates for the 2008 North Dakota State Fair are Friday, July 18 through Saturday, July 26.

The North Dakota State Fair was recently named the 2008 Governor's Travel and Tourism Event of the Year in recognition of the organization's seven consecutive years of attendance growth and the emphasis it places on showing every attendee the best that North Dakota has to offer.

"The North Dakota State Fair Board of Directors and staff members work hard to balance continuing valuable Fair traditions while keeping up with the newest trends," Fair Manager Bob Wagoner said.

New this year, Fair attendees can check out flash video cameras from the State Fair office and make their own movie of their day at the Fair. After the camera is returned to the office, the staff will edit and upload the video to www.YouTube.com/ndstatefair. Fairgoers will then be able to share their day at the Fair with their friends and family. There will also be a NDSF Guitar Hero Championship taking place the last Friday of the Fair.

Additional contests include dodgeball, basketball, text messaging, a greased pig catch, daily karaoke competitions, kid's pedal pull and essay contest. Fair attendees are invited to compete in each of the competitions for a chance to win cash, prizes and concert tickets.

"When you consider the numerous livestock shows, our great 4-H and FFA exhibits, free entertainment, all the open class static displays from quilts, artwork, horticulture, to baked and canned goods, the Fair is a great bargain. We work hard to maintain our prices, compared to the escalation seen everywhere around us," Wagoner said. The State Fair also offers several promotions and coupons throughout the nine days.

One of the many bargains this year are free carnival rides for Fair-goers. 2008 marks the 40-year anniversary of the partnership between the North Dakota State Fair and Murphy Brothers Exposition to provide the state's largest midway carnival. In celebration of 40 years Murphy Brothers is giving Fairgoers four hours of free carnival rides. Tuesday, July 22 and Thursday, July 24 from 1pm - 3pm carnival rides will be free for all Fairgoers.

The Fair may be most notably known for its world-class, yet affordable entertainment. The Cenex Grandstand will be rocking during the Fair with Matchbox Twenty and the Christian contemporary group Casting Crowns. "The Fair has received numerous emails and calls from individuals thanking the Fair for bringing Casting Crowns to the state," said Wagoner. "This will be the first time a Christian group has performed on the Grandstand."

Country acts included on the Cenex Grandstand Showpass include Joe Nichols, Trace Adkins and Clay Walker, Jason Aldean and Miranda Lambert, and Sugarland. Also on the Showpass are the Kahuna Beach Party and Classic Car Show, Enduro Race and Demolition Derby.

Keeping with tradition, three nights of rodeo events will also be featured this summer. The Bull-a-Rama will be shaking the All Season Arena Tuesday, July 22 and Wednesday, July 23 at 7pm. For the first time reserved seating will be available for the event. Back by an overwhelming demand, the second annual Ranch Rodeo will be held Thursday, July 24 at 7pm. Daring cowboys and cowgirls will compete in range doctoring, wild cow milking and team mugging.

No Community Bowl...for now

It's no secret that Measure #2 on yesterday's ballot was a hot topic in our area. Many Young Professionals supported the diversion of a portion of the 1% sales tax to build an area community bowl, while others did not.

Here is an article by provided by the Minot Daily News.

Minot needs to continue to look for a way to build an $11 million community bowl, Mayor Curt Zimbelman said Tuesday following defeat of a measure that would have funded construction.

Voters rejected a measure Tuesday to temporarily redirect half of the 1 percent sales tax for the Northwest Area Water Supply project to a community bowl on a vote of 3,078 to 3,693. The measure would have raised more than $9 million over three years, with the remainder raised in a capital drive.

The proposed facility would have consisted of a sports field with artificial turf, a running track with built-in electronic timing, a scoreboard capable of televised replay and seating for 6,000. It also would have included a three-level building for lockers, gift shop, private suites and press box. A removable bubble dome would have allowed for winter recreation.

"It's too bad for the community," Zimbelman said of the vote.

"The fact of the matter is it's something that's needed in the community so I don't think we can just let it slide at this point," he said. "It's pretty hard to tell you how you go forward with it because I don't know how to fund it without that kind of help that a sales tax can give you."

Zimbelman said the tax diversion would not have hurt NAWS as opponents claimed, but that may have caused people to vote against the measure.

"If we want to grow the community, somehow we have to find a way to be positive about things that will help us to that," he said.

Ron Kramer of Douglas, president of Ward County Farmers Union and a member of the NAWS Only Committee, said the Community Bowl Committee should never have suggested using NAWS money as a funding source.

"We are hoping that this sends a clear message to Mayor Zimbelman and the visioning committee that if they are going to fund their economic development, they need to look at difference sources of revenue," Kramer said. "This is the third attempt at it, and we just feel like no means no."

Voters previously rejected diverting NAWS money to the MAGIC Fund, and the state Supreme Court found the city errantly transferred interest from the NAWS account to its general fund.

Rod Romine, chairman of the Community Bowl Committee, agreed with Zimbelman that the community bowl remains an important issue.

"I don't think the issue if going to go away. I think some how we have to find a way to fund it," he said.

Discussion of a community bowl began when Minot High School and Minot State University proposed to collaborate on a single facility to replace their separate, aging football and track stadium.

A Minot Tool Chest Community then recommended in 2005 that the Minot City Council form a steering committee to look into the feasibility of constructing a multi-purpose community bowl. Later that year, a community task force charged with prioritizing new facilities selected a community bowl as the city's top need. Plans have been to build it at Minot State University.

Rick Hedberg, athletic director at Minot State University, said without the community bowl, the university will have to look at repairing seating at Herb Parker Stadium.

"We are in a situation much like Minot High - that something needs to be done with our facility," he said. "We are going to have to take a hard look at what we can do with our limited resources. We probably won't be able to have the impact citywide in really attracting major events."

MSU already has had to make cuts so he doesn't see the university putting much money into a stadium other than the bare minimum to make it usable. The state doesn't fund sports facilities so money would have to be raised locally.

"We are at a time right now as a city where we are losing tournaments and statewide events," Hedberg said. "I think we have missed an opportunity to remain in that game, to remain competitive with the other cities."

Landing state events isn't by chance, he said.

"It happens because cities make a commitment toward their facilities, and if we look at the other cities, they have made commitments to their facilities. Minot needs to decide whether that's important or not," he said.
